JAMIE Whincup has made a late charge on his final flying lap to finish fastest in today's fourth and final practice for the Sydney Telstra 500.

As the chequered flag fell he leapt from 14th to first with a 1m.28.40s lap, knocking Ford Performance Racing's Will Davison off top spot.

"It was a tough day and the end result is probably a bit artificial," said Whincup.

"I struggled on the set of practice tyres and had to put a race set on to go quick, so we'll have to go quicker tomorrow to be up front."

"Apart from this, I think the debate tonight will be the kerb sensors. I think they'll be turned off tomorrow and in my opinion don't need them."

Second highest finisher Davison agreed with Whincup.

"They seem to be very inconsistent. On my quickest lap I didn't use much kerb and the sensor went off but the next lap I used much more kerb and it didn't go off."

Holden Racing Team's Garth Tander finished the session in third, splitting Davison and his FPR teammate Mark Winterbottom.

"We struggled a lot in the third practice, but then threw a different set up in it between sessions and the car came alive," said Tander.

"It's a credit to the guys, they really turned the car around. At least we're back on track and have a base set up that we can look at overnight and make better for tomorrow."

Lucky 7 Racing's Tim Slade was fifth, ahead of Craig Lowndes, this morning's frontrunner Tony D'Alberto, Jason Bright, Shane van Gisbergen and Steve Owen.

The V8 Supercars will on be track again early tomorrow (Saturday) for a short 20-minute Qualifying session at 9.25am AEDST, then the Top Ten Shootout will determine a pole position winner at 12.00pm AEDST.

Race 29 of the championship - a 74 lap race- will start at 3.05pm AEDST.
