A final conference in the East that was exciting, but unpredictable Boston clamped down on Tampa Bay's offense to come out with a 3-1 victory in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead in the series to return to San Petersburg. This series has been characterized by drastic changes in the game of offense to defense, often back and forth between the two several times in the game itself. The rate changes were equally dramatic and I guess the Bruins may now seem obvious, but not necessarily true. Boston has a good recovery from the fourth game in which wasted half 3-0 start, but after watching this series in five games, it seems that if there is little that is the team is in the next game.
The game started as it should meet another track on the ice when Tampa Bay took the lead just 1:09 after the opening face off. Steven Stamkos had a turnover of Boston on the right side and slid the puck to the left for Simon Gagne, who has switched from Thomas to complete a two on one break. Unfortunately for the Lightning, which was their only bright spot, because they could not break the new Thomas. One of the biggest stories in this game is that Guy Boucher went with Mike Smith between the pipes after Dwayne Roloson was lifted in four games after three goals in the first period. Smith played well to give some points on 19 shots, but suffered losses.
Bruins got goals from a trio of players with the equalizer coming on the stick of Nathan Horton and the final victory by Brad Marchand both coming in the middle. Rich Peverley put the game away with a vacuum line with a minute left in regulation. Tim Thomas stopped 33 shots to win and made good on his promise to Boston would win the game. After five games, we saw three high-scoring contest and scored somewhat low, grinding business. Bruins have won two defensive-oriented, it seems logical that the lowest score and tight control type games are their style, while lightning is more appropriate to put the puck in the back of the net.
Strangely, these were the two best defensive teams in MLS to come into this series, but have not looked at some of the time. The question is, we see networks of Tampa Bay, Roloson was the team to the playoffs, but has now been removed twice during this series, Smith has played well in all three appearances. This is a series that is simply hard to read, and after five games are not surprised by what happens here. Just go to the defense in this.
